Crescent High School Athletic Hall of Fame Adds Five in its 2026-2027 Class 🏆

Michael Brewster, Class of 1991: Michael Brewster was a two-sport athlete at Crescent from 1987 to 1991 as a member of the wrestling and football teams. In football, Brewster was a member of the 1990 team that played for the Upper State Championship, arguably one of the best football teams in Crescent history.
A four-year, two-way starter at fullback and linebacker, Brewster started every game (47) from his freshman season through his senior year. Defensively, he led the team on defense in tackles for three consecutive seasons, and in 1990 was also second in rushing offensively with over 1,000 yards. He was an All-Region football player from 1988-1990, was Region I-AA Defensive Player of the Year in 1990, and received numerous awards from the Anderson Area Touchdown Club. He was named the 1990 Best Defensive Lineman and the 1990 MVP for Football during his playing career. Brewster received a full scholarship to attend Newberry College.

Additionally, Brewster was selected as Crescent’s Most Valuable Wrestler in 1990 and was a member of the 1990 All-Region I-AA Wrestling team.
Brewster’s wife, Julie Gray Brewster, is a Crescent grad and current Reading Coach at Iva Elementary. In addition, their children, Brennan Brewster Watt (a current CHS teacher and Head Cheer Coach), Brady Brewster Ginsburg, and Will Brewster, are also Crescent graduates.

Kayla Pepper Craft, Class of 2017: Kayla was a two-sport athlete in softball and volleyball. In a Hall of Fame that includes a number of other pitchers, she ranks at or near the top in several career/season categories.
Kayla holds the career record for most innings pitched for over Crescent, by over 100 innings. She is 2nd all-time for career wins and 3rd all-time in career strikeouts. She ranks near the top in several single-season categories, including innings pitched, wins in a season, strikeouts in a game, and more. Among numerous awards, she was All-Region, Region Player of the Year, and All-State for three straight seasons, and was the AA State Player of the Year in 2016. Additionally, Craft was selected as the Independent Mail Player of the Year in 2016 and 2017.

Kayla went on to a stellar softball career at Anderson University. She ranks in the top ten in career and season records in SEVEN categories at AU, including 5th all-time in single-season ERA, 9th all-time in career wins (in only three seasons), and 5th all-time for season strikeouts. As a senior, Craft was named the Anderson University Female Athlete of the Year.
Craft is currently a teacher at St. Stephen Middle School and serves as Pitching Coach at Timberland High, both in Berkeley County, SC. She and her husband Eric (also a Crescent grad) reside in Moncks Corner.

Marvin Greene, New Deal and Crescent Administrator, Teacher, and Coach: Marvin Greene served as an administrator, teacher, and coach for Anderson Three for over 25 years and was a significant leader in the transition to the integration of schools in our district. An Army veteran, he served in the United States Missile Defense Command from 1958 to 1960, and began at the New Deal School in 1961. A former player noted that Coach Greene coached every team fielded by New Deal during his tenure, and was the Head Coach of the State Championship New Deal Girls Basketball team in the 1961-62 season.
Upon integration in the early 1970’s in A3, Greene served at Crescent as a Biology and PE Teacher, Assistant Football Coach, and B-Team Basketball Coach from 1972-75. Following one year as the Head Football Coach at Crescent during the 1975 season, he was named Assistant Principal at CHS in 1976. After serving as Assistant Principal for 10 years, Greene was named Principal of Crescent High and held that position until his retirement in 1987.

Fellow Crescent/New Deal Athletic Hall of Famer Craig Drennon describes Greene as “...vital” in the process of integration from New Deal to Crescent, and noted his “...relationship built on respect with students” as critical in that transition. Marvin Greene passed away in November 2021.

David Moody, Class of 1986: David Moody was a two-sport athlete during his time at Crescent, excelling as a member of both the football and baseball teams. As a member of the All-Appalachian AA Region Football teams in 1984 and 1985, Moody was also a part of a 1984 Tiger Football team that made the AA State Playoffs.
Moody’s greatest successes as a Tiger athlete very likely came on the baseball field at Crescent. He set school records in 1985 in batting average, home runs, and RBI’s. In both the 1985 and 1986 seasons, Moody batted over .500 (.517 in ‘85 and .525 in ‘86). His 12 home runs in 1985 (in only 20 games) are school records, and ranked for many years among the “Palmetto’s Finest” records statewide. During that 1985 season, teams did all they could to avoid facing him in the lineup, as he was intentionally walked 12 times in what would today be considered a brief 20-game season.

Since graduating from Crescent, Moody has published two novels, won two SC Press Association Awards, and is a professional golf instructor. He is currently the Head Golf Coach at Emerald High School, where he and his wife, Julie, currently reside.

Ashley Parnell Shugan, Class of 2017: Ashley Parnell Shugan is believed to be the only athlete in school history to make statewide All-Star contests in THREE sports at Crescent. A standout in Basketball, Softball, and Volleyball, she was a Crescent “Iron Tiger” (letter winner in three varsity sports) for five years.
On the basketball court, Ashley was a five-year varsity starter, made All-Region three times, and was selected to the North-South All-Star team in 2017. She joined the 1000-Point Club in 2017 and was named MVP for her team each year from 2013 to 2016.
In volleyball, Shugan was a five-year starter, earned All-Region honors three times, All-State honors twice, was Region Co-Player of the Year in 2016, and made the SCCAWS All-Star Team in 2016.

As a softball player, Shugan was a five-year varsity starter, an All-Region selection for four years, an All-State selection for two years, and a member of the SCCAWS All-Star team in 2017. Ashley is top ten in NINE career Crescent Softball categories, including 1st all-time in career base hits and total at bats, and 3rd all-time in plate appearances.
Ashley went on to have an outstanding career in softball at Limestone University, earning Freshman of the Year honors in the Conference Carolinas in 2018 and being named to the first or second team in the Conference Carolinas three times during her career. She currently lives in Alpharetta, GA, with her husband, Dylan.
The Crescent High School Athletic Hall of Fame is proud to announce the selection of five new members to its 2026-2027 group of inductees. The Class will be formally inducted at a ceremony in the Fall of 2026.
