For this week's #TourTuesday we caught up with Crescent students participating in the Michelin Youth Apprenticeship Program at the US8 Michelin Plant. The Michelin Starr Plant manufactures semi-finished rubber mixes. Throughout the program, students complete learning modules throughout the plant, while also earning a wage. On our tour, we witnessed students working in different areas of the plant as raw materials are processed into rubber compounds known as semi-finished mixes. These semi-finished mixes are used in the manufacturing of tires at Michelin's tire plants. Students work half the day at the Starr Plant and spend the other half in their standard instructional time at Crescent. Because of the apprenticeship program, our seniors are given a fantastic opportunity that allows them to make a smooth transition to the workforce, while also benefiting from working with one of the world's top employers. The US8 plant is dedicated to providing the most innovative material that Michelin customers expect, and we are thankful for Michelin's continued dedication to our students!

This week art students in Mrs. Sarah Jordan’s class at Starr-Iva used the Impasto technique to create animal paintings. Impasto is a painting technique where paint is laid on an area of the surface in very thick layers. This allows the Bush or painting-knife strokes to be visible. This provides texture when dried, and allows the paint appear to come out of the canvas. Artists such as Pollock and Vincent Van Gogh used the technique quite frequently. 🎨

As we introduce the 4th and final inductee for the 2018-19 Crescent/New Deal Athletic Hall of Fame Class, we recognize and honor Coach John Franks. From 1987-1990, Coach Franks’ football teams went 34-13 and fell just shy of the state championship game in 1990. Coach John Franks passed away in 2001. Coach John Franks (Football Coach, AD - 1987-1991): In his time as Head Football Coach at Crescent, Coach John Franks’ teams experienced much success. He has the highest winning percentage of any football coach in Crescent history. Under his leadership, Crescent won the Skyline Conference Championship in 1990 and was runner-up in 1989. While he was coach, Crescent won at least ten games in a season twice, in both 1989 and 1990, and his 1990 team has the most wins of any Crescent football team with 12 victories. Coach Franks was the Skyline Conference and Anderson Touchdown Club Coach of the Year in 1990, and his 1990 team fell just short of the State Championship game, losing in a very close contest at Crescent. Coach Franks suffered a debilitating stroke that tragically cut short his coaching career. Coach John Franks passed away in 2001.
