Mr. Todd Johnson
How Mr. Johnson got started:
Early in life Mr. Johnson dreamed of becoming a Park Ranger, but as he grew into a young man he realized that the love he felt for chilren was ever-present. During his first two years of college he participated in a program designed to help tutor students. This experience was the best he could have asked for and helped him make the final decision to study Secondary Education.
Mr. Johnson entered Liberty University in the fall of 1999. Not only did Liberty have a great reputation for producing excellent teachers who were well trained, but Liberty also placed education majors in public school classrooms for field experiences. It was through one of these field experiences that Mr. Johnson got his first teaching job at Staunton River Middle School in Bedford, VA.
Mr. Johnson believes that his greatest contribution is the time he puts in with his students. He works hard to get to know each student's interests and needs. He understands that there are students who depend on him in various aspects of their lives and he feels that each day he has a purpose as he enters his classroom. Mr. Johnson works hard to provide students with a fun leaving environment where they can work with someone who cares about them personally.
Mr. Johnson's personal belief about teaching:
Mr. Johnson's personal beliefs include several factors: setting goals, staying focused, following a plan, building relationships, and moving ahead.
Mr. Johnson sets goals for himself but he sets goals for his students as well. By using testing and test scores to provide instrution or remediation, each student is able to feel confident in his or her learning.
By working closely with team teachers, attending professional development classes, staff development meetings, and studying each subject before presenting the material, Mr. Johnson is about to stay focused throughout the school year. Mr. Johnson works to keep students focused by using interactive teaching such as "Teach the Teacher" in which students are required to teach each other, thus demonstrating understanding rather that memorization.
Having a plan for each day and ensuring that students understand what steps are needed in order to remain engaged and carry out a plan successfully are also integral parts of Mr. Johnson's teaching strategy. Through the building of relationships and through encouragement Mr. Johnson works to teach his students about more than just Social Studies. He works hard to have a positive relationship with students so that he can help them learn to have positive relationships with others.
Lastly, Mr. Johnson always moves ahead but he never forgets. He starts each class wtih new ideas and a knowledge of changes that need to be made based on the previous years successes and failures.
Mr. Johnson loves coming to work everyday is enjoys the fulfillment teaching offers.
