READ, READ, READ…It is never too soon to start reading to your child! If a child associates reading with pleasure when they are young they are more likely to enjoy reading when they are older.
•Hold your child close to you when you read.
•Read with expression, using different voices and sounds.
•Emphasize rhythms and rhymes. Encourage the child to repeat.
•Use pictures to build vocabulary.
•Encourage your child to ask questions and repeat phrases.
•Choose books about things that interest your child or those associated with a subject they need to learn. (Ex. Tying shoes)
•Establish a “reading time” routine; bedtime or naptime.
•Allow the child to choose the book.
•Read stories again and again. Repetition helps them learn how stories are organized.
